The Meaning of Advent
In a season full of shopping and feasting, parties and gifts, followers of Jesus choose to pause and make space to remember His coming. The season of Advent is part of the church calendar that has been observed for over 1,500 years. Beginning on the fourth Sunday before Christmas, Advent means "coming, arrival". We remember Jesus' first coming and anticipate his second coming. Advent is traditionally observed with a period of fasting, prayer, and giving to the poor. Other common practices include using an Advent reader for daily meditations, counting down the days with an Advent calendar, having a manger scene in the home, and the lighting of Advent candles each Sunday. At church we will be lighting candles each week under the themes of hope, peace, joy, love, and the Christ candle on Christmas Eve. Our Advent and Christmas theme this year is "And God Moved into the Neighbourhood". We'll be taking time to consider the wonder of Jesus becoming human. May you and your family experience a hopeful and meaningful season of Advent. |
