The word "Advent" comes from the latin word meaning "Coming." Before Christmas the church prepares herself for the coming of Jesus Christ, with prayer, preaching and worship. This preparation has a dual focus. During this season we reflect on the wonderful fact that the Son of God was born as a human person two thousand years ago, which is the first focus. However, we also cast our minds to the second coming of Jesus, the second 'advent,' where Jesus will return as the King of Kings and Lord of Lords to make all things new.
This Advent season Fraser Lands will be focusing on the second coming by sitting under Matthew 24–25. On the Mount of Olives Jesus gave a long teaching about the future and his second coming, teaching with parables to help us. Jesus' teachings are practical and aim at shaping how we live now. He warns and encourages us to live with regard to the future.
The key command in the teaching is to 'Keep Watch.' Jesus says each of us is like a night guard, who has a responsibility to stay awake and be alert. Being alert is part of everyday Christian living.
