Surely God is my help;
the Lord is the one who sustains me.
Psalm 54:4
In January to March, we will be looking at the life of David, at least the beginning of his career as an Israelite soldier (1 Samuel 15–23). David is a central figure in the bible; the amount of space the bible devotes to David is second only to Jesus.
His career starts with a bang. After Samuel anoints him, David quickly defeats an enemy that seemed invincible, launching him into fame and success. However, the king is tormented with jealousy at David's success and exiles him from the kingdom. During this exile period many things happen to David.
David is an example of faith to us. Throughout his early life he trusts God in difficult circumstances and refuses to take control of his destiny. It is in exile that David learns what faith really means. During this exile, David penned some of the most famous Psalms (18, 34, 54, 56, 59, 63 and 142).
However, the real hero of the story is YHWH. Time and again God saves, protects and helps David. Even though this season was hard, David learned to say that, 'God is my help.'
